Traditional medicine and Folk medicine

In traditional medicine, a living thing is regarded as "a unity of body, feelings, mind and spirit," and health is defined as "a state of well-being where harmony exists among body, mind, the social and ethical spheres and spirit." As it takes care of not only the body but also the mind and spirit, it is truly a holistic medicine.

The major traditional medicines, which are practiced in various parts of the world, are traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Indian medicine (Ayurveda) and Unani medicine (ancient Greek and Arab medicine), in addition to which are the medicines derived from the above three. Japanese Kampo, Korean and Northern Vietnamese medicines have their origins in TCM. The medicines of Tibet, Mongolia, Myanmar and Thailand, as well as Indonesian Jamu, derive from Indian medicine, whereas Uyghur medicine is descended from Unani.
