Department of Clinical Application

Outline of the research

We will promote clinical research aimed to create new application of ethical Kampo formulation and that aimed to develop botanical drug product. Thus, we will promote translational research in collaboration with Center for Clinical Research in University Hospital based on the seeds gained from basic research at Institute of Natural Medicine. In addition, we will feed back questions in the clinical practice to Institute of Natural Medicine and provide a bridge to reverse translational research.

Research Projects

  1. Clinical trial aimed at new application of ethical Kampo formulation.
    1. Effect of Hachimijiogan on cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease patients.
    2. Effect of Ryokeijutsukanto on Meniere’s disease.
    3. Effect of Shakuyakukanzoto on paclitaxel-induced myalgia/arthralgia.
  2. Clinical trial aimed at the development of botanical drug product.
    1. Effect of Dioscorea batatas extract on cognitive function.
    2. Effect of Cistanche tubulosa extract on cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
    3. Effect of combined extract of Drynaria fortunei and Eleutherococcus senticosus on cognitive function and anti-stress response.
Effect of Kihito extract on cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease patients based on Japanese Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-J) scores. Changed values of total MMSE- J scores during the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI) alone treatment period and kihito intake period are shown. The score significantly increased during the Kihito intake period compared with the ChEI alone treatment period (n = 10, p = 0.0039, paired t-test). (Watari H, et al.
